Patient confidentiality is the right of an individual to have personal, identifiable medical information kept private. Many states in the US have laws dictating the situation in which a doctor must report to legal authorities. However, there are also medical and ethical rules dictating the maintenance of patient confidentiality. So, where do we draw the line? The laws of medicine state that patient confidentiality cannot be broken unless the patient presents a clear danger to himself or others, and even then, the information can usually be told only to the people the danger is clear and present towards. In this project, we are going to dissect examples of the debate mentioned above, as well as discuss the connection this bioethical issue with its legal counterpart.
